  • Anti-corruption management

    Related Material Themes:


    Suzano’s work in relation to the fight against corruption is mainly based on what is set out in our Code of Conduct and in our Anti-Corruption Policy in relation to this matter. Therefore, as a starting point, we map potential risks related to corruption in four different categories – Financial, Compliance, Operational and Strategic -, both in our operations and at corporate level, in order to mitigate potential misconduct in the company as a whole. Thus, we assess and prioritize risks according to their probability of occurrence (remote, possible, likely and very likely) and impact (minor, moderate, major and extreme). For risks defined as priorities, at least one action plan must be established. In 2019, the main risks mapped were: failure to disseminate (communication and training) the Code of Conduct and Corporate Policies to internal and external stakeholders; non-application of forms (Compliance and Conflict of Interest); failure to adapt international offices to company guidelines and/or local regulations; and making donations and sponsorships in disagreement with the company’s strategy.

    In addition, in order to keep all employees updated and committed to the guidelines and expected behaviors in relation to the topic, the Compliance and Ombudsman teams provide, through the UniverSuzano platform, mandatory training related to fighting corruption. For employees without access to UniverSuzano, in partnership with the People and Management area, training is conducted in person. In this sense, in 2019, to encourage our employees to take part in training in this topic, incentive notices were also launched on “Bom dia, Suzano” (Good morning Suzano), the company’s internal communication channel, in addition to direct messages to managers to encourage their teams to receive training, among several other means of communication. Our goal is for 100% of our employees to take the mandatory training by December 13, 2021, two years after it became available (considering that training is refreshed biannually, as well as training in the Code of Conduct).

  • Approach to environmental management system (EMS)

    Suzano’s industrial environmental management system is certified under the NBR ISO 14001:2015 standard. The forest management system, in turn, is attested by the forest management standards FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council®)1 and PEFC/CERFLOR (Brazilian Forest Certification Program), whose content includes several requirements related to environmental issues. Therefore, both in our industrial and forestry operations we have our own environmental management systems specific to each reality. Each industrial unit has a member of the area responsible for managing this topic, while in the forestry units, management is coordinated by teams that work specifically on environmental issues, guiding operational teams to act in accordance with established standards.

    In order to monitor the certifications related to these systems, internal and external audits are performed annually. Internal audits are performed by auditors trained internally and assigned for this purpose and/or by duly qualified consultants. External audits, in turn, are performed by internationally accredited certification bodies.

    Suzano’s environmental management also follows a series of internal company procedures, such as surveys of environmental aspects and impacts, management of environmental events and waste management. The company’s Corporate Environmental Management and Controlled Wood Policies, both available on our website, also guide the company in its actions on this topic. It should be noted that new versions of these policies are in the approval phase and should be published soon. In the forestry area, Suzano’s environmental management system also complies with the FSC Association Policy, as well as with the FSC and PEFC/CERFLOR certification standards.

    Suzano’s main results in 2019 with regard to environmental certifications were:

    • recertification of ISO 14001 with unification of the scopes of former Fibria and Suzano Papel e Celulose (units included in the current scope: Imperatriz, Mucuri, Aracruz, Suzano, Rio Verde, Limeira, Jacareí, and Três Lagoas);
    • recertification of Forest Management FSC and PEFC/CERFLOR in the Forestry Business Units (UNFs) in the States of Bahia and São Paulo;
    • unification of the certification scopes of the São Paulo Forestry Unit in the FSC and PEFC/CERFLOR Forest Management (unification of the Forestry Units of former Fibria and Suzano Papel e Celulose);
    • reformulation of the certification scopes of FSC and PEFC/CERFLOR Forest Management in the States of Bahia and Espírito Santo;
    • inclusion of the lignin plant in the GIS scope (ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001);
    • inclusion of tissue processes in the ISO9001 standard at the Imperatriz and Mucuri units.

  • Biodiversity management in forestry operations

    Biodiversity management at Suzano relies on a Biodiversity Monitoring Plan and a specific procedure on Assessment and Monitoring of High Conservation Value Areas – HCVAs (where we monitor biodiversity). In addition, we have established goals and indicators focused on biodiversity conservation and specific documents for the units, such as the Environmental Restoration Guide and the Management Guide for Conservation of Protected Areas.

    The Biodiversity Monitoring Plan involves:

    • the representativeness of monitoring at landscape level;
    • the definition of bioindicators (bird and mammalian species and tree vegetation);
    • the standard of biodiversity monitoring.


    The HCVA Monitoring Plan, on the other hand, presents the monitoring indicators, potential risks to the identified high-value attributes for biodiversity and the necessary protection measures.


    External commitments and partnerships

    To ensure careful and efficient management, Suzano adopts different approaches to conservation and restoration processes. In this sense, the company participates in the Sustainable Forest Mosaics Initiative (IMFS), which integrates planning and implementation of land use and conservation activities together with NGOs and other companies in the sector. The initiative also includes elements of conservation in forest development programs (incentives, credit and private technical assistance to support forestry activities by other rural landowners).

    Based on constantly debated and improved actions being implemented by companies and organizations, (as the Forest Forum of the Extreme South of Bahia, a local instance of the Forestry Dialogue), IMFS aims to increase the effectiveness of biodiversity conservation efforts in forest mosaics that combine native remnant and planted forests. With regard to the Restoration Program, IMFS determined priority areas for the Program’s work, in order to form connections between important natural areas, such as Conservation Units and large and well-preserved forest fragments.

    With the Laboratory of Ecology and Forest Restoration and the Laboratory of Tropical Forestry, both from the University of São Paulo (USP), located in Piracicaba (São Paulo state), the company has maintained a technical partnership since the beginning of its Restoration Program, in the 1990s, seeking to improve methodologies, partnerships to work on the selection of species and other issues of relevance to the management of the topic.

    Joint work with other entities, such as non-governmental organizations (NGOs), Forest Dialogue and universities, is an essential part of this process. From these partnerships, new methodologies for restoration, protection, conservation and monitoring are created, analyzed and tested, aiming to promote improvements in management efficiency, reduce impacts, generate new work opportunities and share knowledge.

    Signing of the Pact for the Restoration of the Atlantic Rainforest, which provides for the recovery of 15 million hectares of forests in the country by 2050, is a clear example of Suzano’s willingness to establish solid partnerships. More than 100 institutions and companies take part in this initiative, which will contribute to the restoration of an important portion of native vegetation cover in the biome. Based on the pact, Suzano put into practice a field test in an area of 11.3 hectares of its property, in Aracruz (Espírito Santo state), where 40 native species of Atlantic Rainforest and eucalyptus were planted in June 2011. This experiment is intended to develop and test eight planting models with native species, including the use of eucalyptus as a pioneer species to guarantee economic yield in areas of Legal Reserve (RL) and areas with low agricultural potential in northern Espírito Santo and southern Bahia.

    The company also has a partnership with The Nature Conservancy (TNC). In its 12th year, the initiative consists of implementing ecological monitoring in the areas of restoration. This partnership already provides a large database to analyze the efficiency of restoration methods and techniques, as well as for the sharing of technology.

    Suzano still adheres to the Alliance for the Restoration of the Amazon, a pact for the conservation of this biome, which today is considered the largest biodiversity reserve on the planet. Restoring the Amazon Rainforest is the priority action of the Alliance and also for its founding organizations (among which are civil society organizations, government institutions, research institutions and companies), also seeking to boost the economy of forest restoration in this biome and promote all links in this production chain, generating business, work and income opportunities.

    The company also has partnerships that focus on the conservation of key species, such as:

    • scientific research on the black lion tamarin (Leotopithecus chrysopygus) at Rio Claro farm, in Lençóis Paulista (São Paulo state). Partnership with Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP) in Rio Claro;
    • ecology and behavior of the southern muriqui (Brachyteles arachnoides) in a remnant of Atlantic Rainforest in the Environmental Protection Area (APA) Serra da Mantiqueira, at the São Sebastião do Ribeirão Grande Farm, in Pindamonhangaba (São Paulo state). Partnership with Instituto Pro Muriqui;
    • study on the occurrence of the marsh antwren (Formicivora paludicola) at Fazenda Putim, in Guararema (São Paulo state). Partnership with Save Brasil.


    Partnerships that are also fundamental for the promotion of regional territorial development – therefore, for the maintenance of biodiversity – are those initiatives with vulnerable rural communities, to perform operational activities necessary for the implementation and maintenance of areas for restoration and production of native seedlings used in our programs. The seedlings are purchased from commercial and community nurseries, such as the Social Nursery Meninos da Terra, in Linhares (Espírito Santo state), and the Community Nursery of the Arboretum Program, located in the Rio Preto National Forest, in Conceição da Barra (Espírito Santo state).


    Management and identification of risks and opportunities

    Management of biodiversity at Suzano and the risks related to it is also monitored through external audits, in accordance with responsible forest management standards FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council®)¹ and PEFC/CERFLOR (Brazilian Forest Certification Program), as well as the following internal processes:

    • internal audits;
    • Partnership for Sustainability (PPS) – regular checks concerning knowledge of environmental issues and compliance with auditing principles and internal standards in the area;
    • anthropic monitoring of environmental events by a specialized team;
    • property surveillance, which, in addition to registering occurrences, takes protective measures to control hunting, predatory fishing, flora thefts, deforestation and fires;
    • matrix of Environmental Aspects and Impacts.


    In addition, to reduce, prevent and mitigate the impacts arising from these operations, the following actions are planned:

    • microplanning of forestry operations (environmental recommendations, mosaic cutting);
    • Pre and Post-Operation Monitoring of Forestry, Harvesting and Logistics;
    • Management of Environmental Aspects and Impacts related to Forestry, Harvest and Logistics operation;
    • Environmental Training Program for employees and communities;
    • obtain knowledge to improve the management of the topic;
    • Emergency Control and Fire Fighting Program;
    • Property Surveillance and Integrated Forest Protection System;
    • Monitoring of Wildlife and Flora, and Water Resources;
    • Monitoring of Social and Environmental Events;
    • Waste Disposal Management;
    • compliance with sustainability commitments assumed by the company, forest certification requirements, legal demands (especially conditions for Environmental permits), international agreements (such as the Convention on Biological Diversity – CDB and World Business Council for Sustainable Development – WBCSD), and sector and multilateral agreements (as the Sustainable Forest Mosaics Project).


    Regarding monitoring actions, the development and changes in components and parameters of the landscape and of the communities of wildlife and flora are also monitored, in order to assess in greater detail the effects of our forest management on the environment and, from there, promote the identification of opportunities for improvement.

    Certifications at Suzano are managed both for our forestry and industrial operations, attesting to our responsible social and environmental conduct in each stage of our production chain. In this sense, each industrial and forestry unit has at least one member of the teams responsible for managing this topic in the company, in order to guide the operational areas to act in accordance with the certification requirements.

    Our forestry certifications seek to ensure the good use of natural resources and quality human relations in these environments. Today, our responsible forest management is due to a solid social and environmental governance model, which adopts the best practices and management standards in order to create value for the environment and for all audiences with whom we interact, in full compliance with the Sustainability Strategy and with the company’s long-term vision. Additionally, this model is attested by the strictest national and international standards focused on this topic – FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council®)¹ and PEFC/CERFLOR (Brazilian Forest Certification Program) -, which ensures the company’s good conduct when developing forest products, respecting the environmental, social and economic aspects of the region. In these cases, the company is audited annually, based on pre-established environmental, social and economic performance standards.

    Our industrial certifications, in turn, demonstrate the use of best practices in management of processes in our production units, ensuring, in a balanced way, the creation of value and innovation and efficiency in our operations. They are: FSC®² and PEFC/CERFLOR for the chain of custody, ISO 9001 (quality), ISO 14001 (environmental management) and OHSAS 18001 (health and safety).

  • Diversity management

    For Suzano, working on diversity and inclusion is, in addition to being a duty, a business strategy. In a diverse and inclusive environment, employees feel more involved, creativity and contributions proliferate and retention and new talents attraction rates increase significantly. For this and many other reasons, the topic of diversity is part of our Cultural Drivers today.

    In this sense, as part of the necessary measures to build a fully diverse and inclusive environment in our operations, we institutionalized in 2019 the Plural Program, , an internal movement that emerged organically and voluntarily at Suzano in 2016 with the objective of valuing diversity and encouraging inclusion in the company. The Program relies on five affinity groups, having senior executives as sponsors, and has been working to clarify concepts, analyze metrics and propose internal actions in line with the manifesto that states the company’s position regarding this topic. The five groups are: Women, Black¹ (race and ethnicity), Pride (LGBTI+²), People with Disabilities (PwDs) and Generations.

    Additionally, Suzano conducted in 2019 its Diversity Census for the first time, which enables the creation of consistent diversity and inclusion indicators across the company, as well as monitoring and verification of the data over time. Furthermore, to ensure proper management of the topic, Suzano launched its Diversity and Inclusion Policy on December 26, 2019, in order to determine the guidelines that will govern diversity and inclusion initiatives in all the company’s operations. Based on that, we aim to guarantee the following principles:


    • have an inclusive environment that favors diversity, as it strengthens us, always seeking to build an environment based on respect for differences, balance and well-being, forming the basis for a harmonious and healthy coexistence between our employees and other stakeholders, enabling everyone to feel included, supported and listened to, regardless of the characteristics that make each one of us unique;
    • repudiate any prejudiced, discriminatory or harassing behavior and react in accordance with the Code of Conduct;
    • have an environment where employees are sure that issues such as origin, age, sexual orientation, gender, ethnicity, religion, family constitution, aesthetics – do not influence their assessment as professionals or affect access to development opportunities.


    In December 2019, Suzano also signed the following public commitments to value diversity: Business Initiative for Racial Equality, the Forum of LGBTI+ Companies and Rights, and the Women’s Empowerment, of the United Nations (UN).

    Therefore, following the proposition of promoting diversity and inclusion through actions to expand representativeness and create a culture of respect for individuality throughout our value chain, our goals for 2020 are:


    1. to increase by 1 percentage point the number of people with disabilities (PwDs) in the company;
    2. to increase by 10% the total number of women in the company, including in leadership positions;
    3. to increase by 6% the number of blacks in non-operational positions at the company;
    4. to ensure that Suzano has a 70% inclusive environment for the LGBTI+ audience.

  • Energy management in industrial operations


    Suzano’s energy mix is mainly supported by renewable sources, such as: biomass composed of bark, logs and by-products of the wood chipping process; and liquid biomass, known as black liquor, responsible for generating the largest portion of energy. Also, some units have begun to use the energy from biological sludge in biomass boilers.

    Some production units generate surplus electricity, which is made available to the national grid (Interconnected System – SIN), contributing to the level of renewable energy in the Brazilian electricity mix.

    In this way, we reinforce the organization’s commitment to optimize its processes within the concepts of bioeconomics.

    The main complaints refer to the inappropriate behavior of managers, fraud, inappropriate behavior of coworkers, physical conditions of the workplace, remuneration, working hours, benefits, labor issues, changes to job description, selection/hiring/termination process, inappropriate treatment of service providers, non-payment, career/promotion, health and safety, and information security.

    Of the 669 complaints received by the Ombudsman Channel, after due analysis and investigation by the eligible professionals, 211 disciplinary measures were applied, namely: improvement of the process/creation of control, feedback, guidance and monitoring, termination for cause, termination without cause, written and oral warning, replacement of contractor and termination of services contract. All complaints are answered through the external ombudsman channel, and whistleblowers receive their answers through their tracking number issued when the complaint is registered.

  • Labor relations management

    Suzano follows current legislation and the guidelines established in the Company’s Code of Conduct regarding labor and union relations, committing to maintain respectful relations with employee’s representatives and to comply with the agreements signed.

    The company’s Labor Relations area is monitored by internal and external audits, and the agreements signed are also supervised by public agencies, mainly by the Labor Relations Department and the Federal Revenue Service.

    One of Suzano’s basic principles is to establish quality relationships with all of its stakeholders, as set forth in the Company’s Code of Conduct. In this sense, since the management of our business involves many people, we seek to ensure that all of our relationships are duly guided by the highest ethical and integrity values.

    The purpose of the Code of Conduct is to commit our directors, officers, administrators, managers, shareholders, employees, contractors, suppliers, customers, people or entities with which relate, stakeholders of Suzano and its subsidiaries and affiliates to the ethical principles that guide our business conduct and disseminate them to our relationship network. This involves permanent respect for human rights, as a fundamental condition to be met by all parties involved in our business.

    The following are some of the topics covered by our Code of Conduct:

    • compliance with laws, internal rules and procedures;
    • confidentiality of information not disclosed to the market;
    • commitment to best corporate governance practices to comply with the regulation, which covers publicly traded companies;
    • anti-corruption practices;
    • receiving gifts and presents;
    • conflicts of interest;
    • harassment of any nature, inappropriate behavior, discrimination, child labor and/or slave labor;
    • professional appreciation;
    • sustainable development;
    • transparency.

    As stated in the document, we are committed to equity, accountability, corporate responsibility and to ensuring human rights in our business and operations. To reinforce this commitment, we develop actions to raise awareness on these issues through communications, training and team meetings. As an example of these activities, in 2019 we prepared a mandatory training on the Anti-Corruption Policy, in video format, and disclosed our Code of Conduct to all employees.

  • Management approach on the use of agrochemicals

    For biological control in eucalyptus forests, Suzano has in place internal procedures on pest and disease management and, externally, the company meets the criteria set out by the forest management certifications FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council®)1 and PEFC/CERFLOR (Brazilian Forest Certification Program), which have their own policies on the use of agrochemicals. In addition, the company fully complies with the current Brazilian legislation on this subject, in addition to using only products legally regulated in Brazil for the crop and the biological target to be worked on.

    Also, in addition to voluntarily adhering to FSC and PEFC/CERFLOR Certifications, we take part in other initiatives geared towards the responsible use of agrochemicals. They are:


    • Forest Protection Research Program (Protef): linked to the Forestry Research Institute (Ipef), this program focuses on the sustainable management of pests, diseases and weeds;
    • Forest Defense Committee of the Brazilian Tree Industry (IBÁ): group of companies in the forestry sector that discuss issues and strategically align technical positions regarding the Ministry of Agriculture’s chemicals policy, providing an environment for discussions and advances on this topic;
    • Research projects: partnerships with various universities and research institutes in Brazil and abroad, with works related to the integrated management of pests, diseases and weeds (ex.: UFV, Unesp, Clonar, UFLA, Esalq/USP and UFVJM).


    We set annual goals for the implementation of biological pest control, as well as continuous goals for genetic control (both exceeded in 2019), through the selection of clones assessing their resistance to pests and diseases. The achievement of these goals helped reduce the use of agrochemicals in controlling pests and diseases, in particular at the São Paulo Forest unit concerning the control of bronze bugs and Gonipterus, with a reduction in the use of agrochemicals of 100% and 97%, respectively.

  • Management approach on the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs)

    All activities performed by FuturaGene, Suzano’s biotechnology subsidiary, are regulated by the National Technical Commission on Biosafety (CTNBio), an agency linked to the Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovation and Communications, which advises the Brazilian federal government on issues related to biosafety of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). The company follows the Biosafety Law, as well as all regulations and communications published by CTNBio, and all of its facilities operate under a Biosafety Quality Certificate (CQB – Certificado de Qualidade em Biossegurança) granted by the Commission, which makes it possible to develop its research projects and carry out the respective biosafety assessments of its technologies in laboratories, greenhouses and fields, in accordance with the guidelines established by legislation.

    FuturaGene has in place an Internal Biosafety Commission (CIBio), whose legal role is to ensure support for compliance with legislation, promote training and make recommendations regarding biosafety, and supervise activities with GMOs and their by-products within the company. FuturaGene’s activities are inspected internally by CIBio, which periodically assesses whether the processes are being carried out in accordance with the criteria established by CTNBio and by the regulatory and registration agencies – Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MAPA), Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA) and the National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA).

    The company requests authorization from CTNBio to install each new experiment in the field and submits an annual report to the Commission describing all activities performed in the laboratory, greenhouses and fields. FuturaGene’s activities in Brazil are frequently supervised by MAPA and IBAMA.

    FuturaGene voluntarily adheres to the Program for the Recognition of Compliance with the Principles of Good Laboratory Practice (GLP), operated in Brazil by the National Institute of Metrology, Quality and Technology (Inmetro). BPL is a quality system that encompasses the organizational process and the conditions under which non-clinical studies on safety to human health and the environment are planned, developed, monitored, recorded, filed and reported. FuturaGene holds the GLP recognition for studies involving the detection, identification and quantification of GMOs through molecular methods, used for the step of molecular characterization and quantification of protein expression in genetically modified events.

    FuturaGene has developed a multidisciplinary Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for selecting Research & Development projects, including those related to GMOs. Each potential technology/project is evaluated taking into account its scientific aspects (characteristics, concept, history in other species), business prospecting (need, cost, return), regulatory issues (prior approval in other countries, potential risks, biosafety) and intellectual property issues (existing patents, right of use, freedom of operation). Any technology that poses risk to the environment, human or animal health is excluded through these filters. The development of products that show adverse or unexpected results during biosafety or performance evaluations is immediately suspended until a complete review of all criteria is finalized, which may lead to the restructuring or cancellation of the project.

    Suzano developed a policy and a positioning document on the experimentation and use of genetically modified trees. In particular, this policy sets out the commitment to:


    • maintain compliance with all applicable laws, conventions and protocols;
    • transparency;
    • scientific advancement based on ethical decisions;
    • global dialogue;
    • provide access and share benefits along the entire value chain, with technology transfer at no cost for humanitarian or environmental purposes;
    • recognition of risks or controversies related to the use of emerging technologies;
    • avoid the most controversial practices related to emerging technologies;
    • inform about the use of emerging technologies;
    • implement measures that reduce or mitigate the risks associated with emerging technologies.

    Suzano and FuturaGene also follow the criteria established by the forest certification bodies, such as FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council®)¹ and PEFC (Brazilian Forest Certification Program), with regard to GMOs, and performs activities for research purposes only, and in areas outside the scope of certification. Suzano is in the process of formalizing its positioning and policy regarding genetically modified trees and intends to publish the documents already in the first half of 2020.

  • Management of air emissions in industrial operations


    In order to ensure the reduction of environmental impacts resulting from our operations, we manage our air emissions in full compliance with the legislation in force on the subject, that is, in accordance with CONAMA regulations, at national/federal levels, and with the environmental permits for the operations. In addition, the standards established by the Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC) and the International Finance Corporation (IFC) are used internally as benchmarking scenarios and guidelines for us to optimize our management on this topic, even though the established goals are set out by a federal body. To this end, management of our emissions is continuously monitored. The data obtained are presented to regulatory agencies for each operation at the defined periodicity. In addition, data are verified in internal and external audit processes according to ISO 14001:2015.

  • Management of Compliance

    At Suzano, we have a team fully dedicated to compliance as an integrated part of the company’s Risk Management. In this sense, the area acts directly using the first line of defense concept through standards of ethics and conduct, covered and disseminated, including in the business areas themselves, in order to enable the identification and mitigation of possible risks of non-compliance in the various activities performed in the company.

    At Suzano, the topic of compliance is also covered, mainly, by the company’s Code of Conduct and Anti-Corruption Policy. Therefore, aiming at the greater dissemination of the topic among our employees, we send communications and e-learning about compliance in order to reach 100% of the audience in question. Based on this, the company’s Compliance team monitors training completion on a daily basis and reports the results to the Internal Audit, to the Statutory Audit Committee and, consequently, to the Board of Directors, as these bodies play the role of sponsors of the topic.

    In 2020, we will focus on expanding the organization’s knowledge of compliance and how this concept applies to Suzano’s different governance level. To this end, we will promote Compliance Week, an entire week dedicated to reflections and clear information on the topic. Thus, our main objective over time is to enable all hierarchical levels of the organization to act in accordance with best market practices on topics of compliance, so that good governance concepts and practices permeate all areas of the company.

  • Management of private social investment

    Suzano’s various types of social and environmental investments and donations are managed so that its results can be measured and evaluated in terms of contributing to the sustainability of the company’s business. Management of this topic is guided by our Internal Social and Environmental Investment and Donations Policy, the Social Demand Management Procedure, the Social and Environmental Investment Project Management Procedure and by the Relationship Management Guide. The Guide and procedures describe the processes and the main relationship tools used with stakeholders at Suzano.

    The company’s Social Development area monitors and evaluates the entire process related to the demands for cooperation, donation and sponsorship, periodically reporting the results of this monitoring to Corporate and Local Risc (units). Risc is a forum that brings together managers from the various areas in order to integrate strategic sustainability policies and guidelines in the company’s management and operation.

    The registration, evaluation, approval and budget monitoring of all social and environmental investment projects are carried out by the Social and Environmental Investment Management module of Sispart, Suzano’s internal corporate system for managing the relationship with stakeholders and social and environmental investment. The progress of the projects is monitored and evaluated by the technical assistance partners and consultants in the responsible area, through technical visits, meetings, training and field days with the associations and participants of the projects, according to the schedules established in the Action Plans.

    The execution of the Action Plan for each project is monitored with evidence such as photos, reports, attendance lists and monitoring of indicators. Updating the activities performed is the responsibility of the entire team of technical assistants and consultants involved and is centralized in the Smartsheet system, a collaborative platform used by Suzano to build and provide tools to manage social and environmental investment projects.

    Field activities, working groups, technical visits and others, carried out by the responsible teams, are recorded in an activity report sent monthly to Suzano’s Social Development area. These monthly reports are filed in Sispart.

    The evaluation of the efficiency and effectiveness of the relationship strategies and of the social and environmental investments adopted, as well as the use of the material, human and financial resources available, is carried out through the Social Monitoring and Evaluation System. The system serves for formulation and reformulation of organizational and strategic operation practices (progress of processes and achievement of goals) and for the analysis and comparison of indicators over time (focus on the result and impact of the intervention). The results of the investments are evaluated at least once a year by means of indicators classified into three categories:


    • Process Indicator: intended to evaluate the progress of the execution of the physical-financial planning;
    • Result Indicator: aims to present the status in achieving the goals established annually;
    • Impact Indicator: presents the internal and external effects related to the corporate drivers established.


  • Management of the relationship with indigenous and other traditional communities

    In the engagement process with indigenous communities, which is guided by our Relationship Management Guide, Suzano recognizes that their customs, social organization, language, beliefs and traditions are legally recognized, as well as their original rights over the lands they traditionally occupy. In this sense, in line with the Universal Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and Convention 169 of the International Labor Organization (ILO) on indigenous and Tribal Peoples in Independent States, the main guidelines for engagement with traditional communities adopted by Suzano are:


    • recognize and respect traditional knowledge and the perspective of peoples and communities as a starting point for the entire engagement and communication process;
    • adequately estimate the timeframes with communities to ensure that their internal processes of understanding and discussion are observed;
    • adopt communication and information dissemination tools that are effective, culturally appropriate and that respect the existing organization of peoples and local communities, in terms of language, format and dynamics;
    • respect the traditional forms and practices of communities and peoples for spaces of governance in which the planning and execution of activities originating from the engagement process are discussed;
    • ensure that the social and environmental investments to be made respect and strengthen the traditional way of life and development priorities of the peoples and traditional communities with which the company interacts;
    • make social and environmental investments that promote institutional strengthening and the political autonomy of representative organizations (local, regional and national levels) and value the specific forms of social and political organization of traditional peoples;
    • support initiatives to strengthen and appreciate traditional culture, quality and culturally appropriate education, and traditional medicine;
    • involve governmental institutions, non-governmental organizations and organizations representing traditional peoples (local, regional and national levels) in the projects developed.

    Regarding management of unfair competition at Suzano, as provided in our Code of Conduct, in the Sustainable Development section, “we act in accordance with the rules and principles of free competition, in force in the various locations in which the company operates, refraining from exchanging sensitive information with competitors that may affect free competition or result in abuse of economic power.”

    In this sense, aiming to further improve our management of this topic, after the definition of our governance structures in 2019 (some time after the official merger between Suzano Papel e Celulose and Fibria), we created a plan to implement a more detailed management approach to competition in the company, to be implemented as early as 2020, once a policy on this topic is approved and effectively implemented.

  • Management of water and effluents in forestry operations

    The intelligent use of water is a priority in Suzano’s investments, as we understand that this is an important natural resource for the balance of our ecosystems and the continuity of our business. In this sense, we perform regular measurements of quali-quantitative parameters of the main river basins where we operate and adopt forest management technologies that favor the efficient use of water resources within these river basins, which helps us reduce the risks of water shortage in neighboring operations and communities.

    In order to better assess the effects of climate on the productivity of forests and to reduce risks in periods of water scarcity, the company has a network of 89 meteorological stations across all forest management units. The information generated is used to assess different scenarios about the impacts of climate change on our forest management and the availability of water resources. In addition, specific studies are conducted based on our Open Air Laboratories (Laboratórios a Céu Aberto), composed of a network of six flow towers (Eddy Covariance system), located in the forests in the states of São Paulo, Espírito Santo, Maranhão and Mato Grosso do Sul. This technological apparatus allows us to monitor in detail the growth of the forest and its interaction with the climate on a daily basis, enabling agile decision-making in the event of adversities.

    Also, in order to advance its processes and improve the notion that natural resources can and should be harmoniously shared with other users, Suzano has made a long-term commitment to implement specific actions in watersheds identified as critical, seeking to increase the availability of water in these locations. The assessment of supply and possible water scarcity is being conducted considering a historical series of water data, as well as environmental and social characteristics of all river basins in Suzano’s forest base. The results, to be released in 2020, will be used to prepare the baseline to gauge the evolution of the long-term goal.

  • Management of water and effluents in industrial operations

    Committed to the protection of natural resources, our water management seeks greater efficiency in production processes and in new engineering projects, in addition to raising awareness among our employees on the use of water.

    In the industrial areas, we work to meet and exceed legal requirements while maintaining optimal operating conditions in the processes. To this end, we continuously monitor the control parameters, such as specific water abstraction, recirculation in processes and quality of the effluents treated. The information and data generated are reported periodically to the teams involved in implementing improvements. This is done through an integrated management system, formally communicated to state environmental agencies.

    In order to reduce water abstraction, our units work on various initiatives to raise awareness among the teams involved in managing these resources, encouraging the implementation of practical actions for recycling and reusing water and continuous process improvements through procedures, standards and technology.

    As an example of these fronts, the Mucuri unit focuses its initiatives on closing circuits, improving washing efficiency, using water from the air conditioning system, heat exchange systems and a strong environmental education process for the conscious use of this natural resource.

    In Jacareí, about 85% of the water abstracted is recirculated in the production process itself before being treated and returned to the environment. This recirculation takes place through internal reuse, such as with cooling water, condensates (steam), bleaching filtrates and white water from dryers, in addition to internal recirculations in the Water Treatment Plant (WTP).

    At the Três Lagoas unit, positive results were achieved after adjustments to the evaporative condenser, improvements in purging controls and implementation of cycle control in the cooling towers, in addition to internal water recovery at the WTP itself, with treatment and reuse of backwash water.

    Another very important action performed by Suzano in this regard is its participation in local river basin committees, to discuss the use of water together with representatives of the Government, companies and civil society. In this sense, through our local teams, we participate in the following committees:


    • Alto Tietê River Basin Committee (SP);
    • Rio Doce River Basin Committee (MG/ES);
    • Litoral Centro Norte River Basin Committee (ES);
    • Paraíba do Sul River Basin Committee (MG/RJ/SP);
    • Piracicaba, Capivari and Jundiaí River Basin Committee (SP).


    Also noteworthy is the participation in the Crisis Committee of the National Water Agency (ANA) for the Tocantins River.

    With regard to Suzano’s public commitments on this matter, in 2019, the company defined long-term goals related to the use of water resources in our operations, involving reduction in water abstraction and consumption in industrial units, as provided in “Long-term goals” of this Indicators Center (item “Water”).

    Occupational health management at Suzano, in all units, is covered by a Health and Safety Management System, based on the guidelines of ISO 45001:2018, OSHAS 18001, ISO 9000, Regulatory Labor Standards (with emphasis on Regulatory Labor Standards (NRs) 7, 9, 15, 17, 31 and 32), on the PDCA cycle concept (Plan – Do – Check – Act or Adjust) and on national and international best market practices.

    Our commitment is to a humanized and nurturing health management, in line with best technical practices in this regard. To do so, it is necessary to understand and assist employees in a comprehensive manner, as human beings who have needs, expectations and physical and psychological aspects, among other factors.

    Therefore, in order to ensure proper management regarding this topic, Suzano has a specific health and quality of life program, called Faz Bem, with a team 100% dedicated to its activities, whose purpose is to develop actions to promote health and quality of life for the company’s employees and their families. In this sense, the company’s processes to manage this topic are subject to external and internal audits, and the advances achieved can be seen in the positive results of the Accident Prevention Factor (FAP – Fator Acidentário de Prevenção)—which indicates the history of occupational diseases and accidents in the company—and in the low rates of medical absenteeism, and are linked to the variable pay (performance bonus) of those involved.

    The company also provides health insurance to all employees and legal dependents. Additionally, throughout the year, the Health and Quality of Life department develops vaccination actions and campaigns that include, in addition to employees, their spouses and children.

    Suzano’s health and quality of life initiatives include:


    • management of medical absenteeism due to ICD M – osteomuscular and connective tissue diseases – in order to monitor musculoskeletal disorders;
    • management of medical absenteeism due to ICD F – mental and behavioral disorders – in order to monitor illnesses of psychological nature;
    • management of leaves involving Social Security, requiring investigation of occupational connection whenever indicated. The first two goals are shared between occupational physicians and the ergonomics consultant;
    • care assistance for employees, providing the treatment and/or referral necessary to their health condition, aiming at the proper control or cure of their health conditions;
    • implementation of ergonomic improvements/adaptations in production processes in industrial and forestry units, with continuous analysis of the work stations and workplace workout;
    • maintenance and support of the existing Ergonomics Committees, showing ergonomic improvements resulting from the work of each one of them;
    • development of quality of life (QOL) actions for employees and their dependents at the company’s Distribution Centers;
    • development of QOL actions covering employees and dependents of our largest industrial and forestry units.


    In addition to the management initiatives already mentioned, we perform other activities within the Suzano’s Quality of Life Program, such as:


    • running group: in 2019, there were 25 races with the participation of 2,500 employees, who had sports advice and costs covered by the company;
    • Amigos da Vida (Friends of Life) Campaign: more than 230 volunteers donated blood in 8 initiatives in 2019, benefiting more than 640 people.
    • Suzano race: held in Imperatriz (Maranhão state), Três Lagoas (Mato Grosso do Sul state) and Jacareí (São Paulo state) with the participation of employees and the community. More than 2.5 tons of food were collected in 2019 as registration fees, and donations to the institutions were delivered by the 112 employees of the Voluntariar Program;
    • Safety Program on Children’s Day: 800 children of employees visited Suzano’s units in 2019 and learned about the importance of safety;
    • Program to Support Pregnant Women: throughout the pregnancy and the immediate postpartum period, employees are supported by a multidisciplinary team. They also have a breastfeeding corner to pump and store their milk after returning to work. Twenty-six women benefited in 2019;
    • Disque Viver Bem: support channel with specialized guidance on physical and mental health, financial and legal issues for employees and family members. In 2019, a total of 6,000 people benefited.

  • Solid waste management in forestry operations


    Forest waste management at Suzano follows state, federal and municipal laws on the subject, in addition to the standards established by the FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council®)¹ and PEFC/CERFLOR (Brazilian Forest Certification Program) certifications and internal operating manuals and procedures. In general, the units list the items and verify sort and store of each type of waste in the field. Therefore, third-party companies generate monthly reports containing the amount of waste disposed by type and methodology applied in each case, and provide the destination certificates. There is also a system to control licenses related to the topic, to meet conditions within the deadlines agreed with the competent environmental agencies.

    Reverse logistics of batteries for devices and machines, packaging of pesticides and herbicides, chemicals and lamps are also carried out, as required by the National Solid Waste Policy. Some units have partnerships with cooperatives for the destination of recyclable waste, as is the case of the units in Maranhão, Mato Grosso do Sul and São Paulo.

  • Solid waste management in industrial operations


    The search for continuous improvement is also reflected in solid waste management in industrial operations. Committed to the protection of the environment, we follow the applicable legislation related to this topic, such as the National Solid Waste Policy.

    All of our units have in place waste management plans and specific operating procedures in this regard. Thus, our waste management focuses on reducing generation at the source and increasing recycling and internal reuse. As a result, we managed to reduce waste sent to our own and/or third-party industrial landfills. And, to ensure greater compliance and identify opportunities for improvement, the units are also periodically audited for their solid waste management.

    Among the initiatives promoted by Suzano for the environmentally sound management of solid waste, at the Limeira unit, industrial waste is sent to companies that compost and transform it into products that can provide productivity gains in agricultural areas. Also, the Jacareí, Três Lagoas and Imperatriz units produce soil acidity correctives from inorganic waste generated in the industrial process, such as dregs, grits, lime sludge and ashes. Thus, with the product obtained, we no longer buy limestone on the market, benefiting the company’s forestry activities. The next step is to introduce organic matter—organominerals—into the process, enabling even more gains in forest management. The organomineral compound produced can also be sold on the market according to the rules of the Ministry of Agriculture.

    In addition to these initiatives, our units properly manage hazardous waste, such as fluorescent lamps, batteries, tires, containers packaging of chemical products, as required by the National Solid Waste Policy. In Belém, through waste sorting, we formed partnerships with recycling cooperatives in the region to receive waste, making possible the three pillars of sustainability and permeating the local socioeconomic development.

    Parallel to these activities, in 2019, Suzano made public commitments regarding solid waste management, defining a specific long-term goal for reducing the volume of industrial solid waste sent to its own and/or third-party landfills, as provided on page “Long-term goals” of this Indicators Center (item “Industrial waste”).

  • Supplier management approach

    Suzano has a structured process for managing and training its suppliers that is also based on its Culture Drivers. This management includes a series of activities to guarantee not only the supply of products and services, but also a relationship based on ethics and integrity with these fundamental links of our value chain. In this sense, in order to hire, register and certify suppliers, we proceed as follows:


    1. economic and financial qualification of suppliers;
    2. background check;
    3. performance evaluation of suppliers of raw materials, inputs and services;
    4. receipt and acceptance of the Code of Conduct;
    5. signature, by the supplier, of the commitments to the Legal and Social and Environmental Responsibility Standards established by Suzano;
    6. management of access and labor obligations of service providers.


    In the supplier performance evaluation process, audited internally and externally (according to ISO 9000, 14000, 18000, INTI, SMETA, Clients), Safety, Environment and Sustainability requirements are applied to 100% of the regular service providers (those performing services for more than 90 days at Suzano’s premises), and suppliers may be classified under degree of excellence, approved, approved with restrictions, and not approved.

    Furthermore, in order to be duly hired, 100% of the suppliers must agree to the Terms of Commitment and Legal and Social and Environmental Responsibility Standards established by the company.

    Additionally, Suzano considers part of its suppliers to be critical. That is, suppliers of inputs and services that can generate significant impacts on quality, process performance, equipment safety and integrity, on the environment and on the health and safety of employees. This group accounts for 5% of the company’s total number of suppliers and corresponds to 36% of the purchasing budget. Thus, different measures are in place to ensure a good relationship with these suppliers and reduce the risk of generating impacts on their end.

    With regard to the development of local suppliers, Suzano has some programs in place in specific units:


    • Supplier Development and Qualification Program (Mato Grosso do Sul state): also known as PQF, this program aims to adapt micro, small and medium-sized enterprises to both basic management requirements and international standards for negotiating with large industries. Suzano is one of the sponsors of the Program, which is intended for any supplier, not only those that work for the company.
    • Integrated Supplier Development and Qualification Program (Espírito Santo state): a joint action by the main companies operating in Espírito Santo to promote, in an integrated manner, the development and qualification of their suppliers of goods and services. This program, also known as Prodfor, has the participation of important sponsor companies installed in the state, which rely on the support of the Federation of Industries of the State of Espírito Santo (FINDES), and coordination of the Euvaldo Lodi Institute (IEL-ES). Suzano is one of the sponsors of Prodfor, which is intended for any supplier, not only those that work for the company.
    • Development of local partners (Bahia state): the purpose of the program, in partnership with SEBRAE, is to promote the sustainability of the supply chain in the regions where we operate, focusing on micro and small enterprises, expanding the qualification of our local partners, encouraging the adoption of best management practices and principles of legal and social and environmental responsibility adopted by Suzano. The supplier development program covers topics such as Entrepreneurship, Financial and Business Management and Taxation, Legal Responsibility and Social and Environmental Principles, and our Culture Drivers. This is a pilot project that started at the Bahia unit, but it is under approval in order to be extended, already in 2020, to other states where the company operates.


    In 2019, the company had 10,255 suppliers, while in its database, there were 35,964 registered suppliers. Both data consider headquarters and branch. These numbers include international suppliers, individuals, legal entities, landowners, public agencies, carriers, among others. Domestic suppliers come from all states in Brazil, while international suppliers include suppliers from all continents. In 2019, spending on suppliers was approximately R$ 17 billion.

  • Training and learning management

    With regard to promoting the continuous learning of our employees, Suzano offers a variety of training courses (mandatory or not) on matters that are significantly important for the proper performance of the activities necessary for each function, in addition to developing onboarding activities for newcomers and having subsidy policies for language, undergraduate and graduate courses. Simultaneously, we are committed to training all leaders in knowledge and attributes desired for the continuous and joint development of our people, always having in mind the profile of Suzano’s leaders and our Culture Drivers. On that basis, we seek to disseminate our strategy internally and connect the development of our employees to the reality of the business.

    All demands for training are analyzed and approved by the requestors, their managers, HR business partner and Suzano’s Corporate Education team. After obtaining all the necessary validations, the action is conducted in accordance with the company’s Internal Training Policy, and proof of completion (such as attendance lists, certificates and evaluations) should be submitted to the area responsible for verification. The information obtained is used for internal and/or external audit purposes regarding the effectiveness and veracity of the actions conducted.

    In this sense, to enhance the different skills of its employees and, then, improve the performance of their work, Suzano has in place the following programs:


    • Onboarding Program: inserts all new employees into Suzano’s culture. Welcomes new employees and prepares them to start their journey in the company;
    • Você Tem Sede de que? (What do you thirst for?): provides training and development actions, focusing on the administrative personnel and specialists. Employees are invited to take part – they register and participate. In-person and online;
    • Suzano Talks (all audiences): initiative that consists of inviting entrepreneurial people from different areas of activity to chat with our employees on current and disruptive topics, promoting the sharing of ideas and experiences;
    • Safety Training: mandatory training to meet regulatory health and safety standards and ensure a safe work environment for all our employees. In addition to basic training, some of the operational employment categories must undergo other mandatory training courses on this subject for the proper performance of their work;
    • Technical Training: specific training for the respective positions and mainly focused on operational workers. For example: Training in Production Maintenance Technique;
    • Program – Elos: specific training and development action for those considered as high performers and high potential in the company. It is a program where employees will be exposed to development, coaching, online and face-to-face training sessions, to leaders, and will take part in discussion forums, projects, among other actions;
    • Training in First Leadership: Training to prepare Suzano’s leaders regarding the desired skills to perform their leadership role.


    The company’s goal is to ensure that 100% of its employees comply with mandatory training and Safety Standards (NRs – regulatory standards). Additionally, the company intends to build a new training and career program for the operational audience (both in forestry and industry), which meets their specific needs.

    Moreover, in line with the public commitments assumed by the company in this regard, we aim to attract, develop and retain more and more talents who today lack opportunities in our society. This ambition reinforces our Culture Drivers in practice and helps us provide a more diverse and inclusive internal environment and build an increasingly fair society.
